At Epitelo Music Academy, we are always seeking to serve our students better. As our studio expands, we are looking for qualified teachers and interns to join our successful team. At this time, we have no openings, but would be willing to hear from interested people for future positions.
The most important part of any employee's background is solid musical training. We won't hire anyone who doesn't have a good background in performance (having taken private lessons of their own), music theory, music history, and aural skills. You should be able to sing on pitch, use solfege, know intervals, chords, part writing, and all of the other integral parts of theory and aural skills. You should also have solid instrumental playing skills on at least one instrument. The preferred candidate is at least a junior in a music education or performance program. A degree in music is even better.
Candidates with experience in ABA or who have training in working with children with autism (in addition to their musical training) are even better. It is important that music teachers be able to serve ALL of their students, regardless of ability or disability.
See below for more information on specific jobs!
We would eventually like to hire a brass teacher somewhere down the road. We will accept resumes and cover letters but are not hiring immediately. Depending on interest/skills, we may start an unpaid internship with intent to hire in the next couple months. This person should have the following qualifications:
*BME or equivalent (or nearing completion)
*Prior teaching experience
*Experience in working with kids with autism/special needs (we will train if necessary)
*Solid playing skills on instrument(s)
*Knowledge of different learning styles, ed psych, etc.
*Solid knowledge of history, theory, etc.
If you have some, but not all of these criteria, we may be able to work with you and train you (especially if you meet all criteria except for experience in autism). The IDEAL candidate for this job will be able to teach several brass instruments.
It is very important for the right person to be very dedicated to music education, and to believe that all students are capable of studying music. We work with students ages 4 - adult who have a variety of special needs (and plenty who are "typical"). We are looking for someone who is very patient with all students, adaptable, and professional. It is important to be on time for lessons and stay focused on the students and their needs during lessons. We will handle all scheduling and billing for you (based on what you tell us your availability is), so we just need you to show up and do a good job. Our studio prides itself on very high quality, personability, and being able to teach children with different needs better than any other studio in the city, so the right person will agree with and work with this philosophy.
It is also important to know that we do staff evaluations biannually, that we hold monthly staff meetings, and that we like to get to know our staff well. This isn't like most studio jobs, where you get hired easily and are totally left alone to teach how and when you please (you do set your own schedule). We bounce ideas off each other, we consult on one another's students, and more. So, if you are looking to be very independent in your teaching, this job isn't for you. If you enjoy being part of a team, then send us an email!
Pay starts at $18 an hour, with potential for raises. There are also bonuses of $50 per student you recruit, even if they end up with another teacher.
Please email us at kate@katesmusicschool.com if you have any questions or are interested.
We are looking for one or two people who would like to "intern" with us. This person will be at least a sophomore music major who is interested in working in a private studio after graduation. This person should have solid instrumental playing skills, preferably on more than one instrument (at least one should be one we currently teach; others can be different). This person should also have solid theory and aural skills knowledge.
An intern will observe lessons, participate in planning musical activities, do some reading about learning styles and special needs, and more. The idea is to expose the intern to a different style of teaching and learning, to train the intern to evaluate the needs of different students, and to allow the intern to respond well to those needs in a one-on-one situation. After a few months of reading, discussing, and observation, the intern will begin to handle his or her own students within the studio, while being frequently observed. This position may lead to a part time of full time teaching job in the future. Questions can be emailed to us.
This program is aimed at high school students who intend to become music majors. It is a multi-step program, which involves the following:
Step 1 -- Music Study. This is the most important step. Students must take private lessons on their chosen instrument for at least a year before moving on. During this time, they will study college-level theory and aural skills, learning about chords, intervals, part writing, and more. This will continue to be the student's focus throughout the program.
Step 2 -- Observation and Reading. Students will begin to observe lessons, and will write comment sheets about what they see (how did the teacher and the student interact? Did it seem positive or negative? What techniques did the teacher use to keep the student on task? etc.). They will also do a lot of reading about different student needs and learning styles, and will spend time discussing this with the teacher. This type of preparation is second most important, because it allows the student teacher to think about the ways in which students learn, and the best ways to approach different students and meet their needs.
Step 3 -- Beginning to Teach. Students will now conduct parts of lessons. The student teacher may be asked to go over a theory assignment with a student, or to help a student working on a computer session. As time goes on, the student will take on more and more teaching tasks. During this stage, the student teacher will be fully observed, and after every session, the student and teacher will talk about how the teaching went, how the student can improve, etc.
Step 4 -- More Teaching. During this stage (during the senior year of high school), students will begin to take on a few students of their own. They will still be frequently, but not constantly observed. The students will be allowed to have up to 5 students, assuming that their own playing and study doesn't take a backseat to teaching.
Step 5 -- Independence. Once a student finishes high school and goes on to a music major program, they are considered 'graduated' and able to start their own studios, should they wish to do so.
Students who are interested in this program should sign up for lessons, and indicate their interest on their application forms.
